Welcome to Barcelona, Spain
Your journey begins in bustling Barcelona one of the most flambouyant and loved cities in the Mediterranean. Las Ramblas and Gaudi’s Sagrada Familia Church are among the favorite sights. Many galleries and the Picasso museum make it an art lover’s dream. After an evening's stay in this vibrant city, board MSC Cruises' Orchestra, your luxurious home for the next seven nights. Marseille, France: An Ancient City with Archeological Riches With 26 centuries of history, Marseille is the most renowned city in France after Paris, with a population of more than one million people. It is the gateway to the spectacular scenery and well-preserved town and villages of Provence with famous Aix-en-Provence former home of artist Paul Cézanne. In modern times, Marseille has been called "the New Orleans of France" because it serves as the crossroads of world traffic. The colorful Vieux Port, the main harbour and marina of the city, is guarded by two massive forts. Dozens of cafés line the waterfront. The Quai des Belges, at the end of the harbour, is the site of the daily fish market. With diverse ethnicity, interesting museums, and striking monuments, you'll find Marseille a fascinating city, blending classic with contemporary culture. Genoa, Italy: The Most English of all Italian Cities The birthplace of Christopher Columbus is full of refined palaces and elegant churches, standing next to humble houses. Museums are filled with Renaissance art from the city's illustrious past. Genoa boasts several spots on the World Heritage List, among them the 16th century Via Garibaldi, with its magnificent palaces, lovely gardens and frescoes. Genoa is also home to the world's oldest working lighthouse, Genoa's city landmark. Take a walk in the historic center with its street vendors and smell the coffee, intermingled with the flavor of pesto sauce. A 19th century writer said, " I have never seen anything like Genoa! It's something indescribably beautiful, grandiose, distinctive," words that remain as true today as they did then. Naples, Italy: Home of the Original Pizza Pie The third biggest city in Italy, Naples is a lively and vibrant port, full of fascinating history, artistic treasures and narrow, winding streets. Visit the Spaccanapoli, mainly a pedestrian zone, with its many churches, buildings and shops, the 13th-century Gothic cathedral and the oldest castle in Naples. It also includes a 4th century basilica (the oldest church in Naples), a baptistry, and Renaissance crypt. This is the city where pizza was born, so make sure you taste the world’s best pizza, baked in wood-burning ovens and accompanied by a glass of the local vino. Nearby are the well preserved ashen Roman ruins of Pompeii excavated from the volcanic fury of Mount Vesuvius. Palermo, Sicily: The Biggest Island in the Mediterranean As Sicily's largest, most cosmopolitan city, Palermo has a history that dates back some three thousand years with beautiful palaces and churches, colorful markets and a distinct cultural identity. See the Four Corners of Palermo, where each 17th-century Spanish Baroque facade is adorned with a statue, truly one of the city's most memorable sights. Tour the famous Norman Cathedral and Capuchin catacombs. Walk along the cobbled streets and stop in the delightful pastry shops. Try granita, the flavored ices. Shop on the pedestrian Via Belmonte for Sicilian-made treasures like ceramic items and original jewelry. Tunis, Tunisia: Of Mosques and Mausoleums With a history that dates back to the 2nd century, Tunis is the capital city of Tunisia. The medina of Tunis is an important World Heritage Site with more than 700 monuments of ancient mosques and masoleums. The ruins of Carthage are nearby as is the Bardo Museum offering a collection of Roman mosaics and other antiquities. But what you won't want to miss is the lively souk or marketplace where you can buy handicrafts of gold, bronze and olive wood as well as watch the artisans weave brightly-colored fabric with hand looms. Palma de Mallorca, Balearic Islands, Spain: A Vibrant Port with a Historic Past Amid fishing boats, pine groves and palm trees lies the capital of the island of Mallorca, famous for its beaches and beautiful sea. Stand in awe of the grand gothic cathedral, the Palace of L'Almudaina, a former residence of the Majorcan monarchs, now a museum and the Museum of Modern Art with famous works by Cézanne, Gauguin, and Picasso. Visit the fish market and Plaza Mayor. Behind the 18th century walls that kept pirates at bay, the historic quarter is concealed. Yet old churches, palaces and stately mansions speak of its prosperous past. Barcelona, Spain: Home to the Renowned Works of Gaudi and Picasso Once you disembark MSC Orchestra, Mayflower has arranged a panoramic sightseeing tour of this dazzling European capital. The lively pedestrian Ramblas and stylish modern buildings create a cultural energy with glorious Art Nouveau architecture that lines the streets. Antoni Gaudí is the most famous designer, leaving behind his masterpiece, the Sagrada Família church, as well as innovative houses and apartment buildings throughout the city. Barcelona also boasts an astounding legacy of important Romanesque and Gothic works and modern galleries containing the life's work of Joan Miró and collections from Pablo Picasso.
